The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
